Intelligent, consistent processes are not limited to hybrid machines. The BEST FIT function eliminates sources of error when switching between machines.
Whether Direct Energy Deposition (DED) or Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), to fully exploit the possibilities of additive manufacturing, highly complex 5-axis simultaneous machining often needs to be programmed. These differ significantly from the tool paths in machining due to the necessity of uniform material flow. With hyperMILL ADDITIVE Manufacturing, the NC codes for metal deposition can be comfortably programmed. Thanks to hyperMILL VIRTUAL Machining, the simulation of machine movements to avoid collisions is based on the NC code and the digital twin of the machine. Unlike many other solutions, the ADDITIVE Manufacturing module is fully integrated into hyperMILL and serves as a comprehensive software solution for efficient hybrid processing with additive and subtractive machining on one machine.
Close to the final dimension
While hybrid machines offer advantages in maintenance, prototyping, and small series, a process chain with multiple machines can be more economical for larger quantities. One of the biggest challenges in post-processing has been the alignment of the 3D-printed blank in the milling center. Because the highest precision is required here, very close to the final dimension, OPEN MIND offers an automatic method for aligning the workpiece with BEST FIT. Instead of painstakingly positioning additively manufactured parts manually for post-processing in the milling machine to match the zero point and axes to the NC code, BEST FIT adjusts the code to the real position of the workpiece in the machine's workspace, imported via measurement and simulation as a digital twin.
From contour-adjacent cooling channels in mold making to innovative material combinations and individual medical technology to bionic lightweight structures in the aerospace industry: exhibitors and visitors of Formnext are aware of the potentials. And indeed, many renowned companies in the mentioned sectors are already utilizing the additive manufacturing functions of hyperMILL,” says David Bourdages, Product Manager Additive Manufacturing, OPEN MIND Technologies AG. “The stronger additive processes establish themselves, the more important it becomes to create robust, consistently networked production processes. This is primarily a software issue, and hyperMILL is perfectly suited for this. We support seamless process chains, starting from CAD through CAM programming of additive and subtractive processing, their NC code-based simulation based on a digital twin, to the networking of CAD/CAM software and machines with hyperMILL CONNECTED Machining.
