Designers of machine tools know the problem: If they want to use larger hoses during modernization, it often requires the expensive replacement of the energy chain. At the AMB trade fair in Stuttgart, igus presents an alternative: retrofittable bracket clips that increase the internal height of energy chains from the E2.1, E4QL, and E4.1L series by up to 200 percent.
A machine builder is modernizing a CNC milling machine. He wants to equip the system with a stronger suction unit. The problem: The suction hose has a larger diameter compared to its predecessor. Therefore, it is too high for the energy chain of the E2 series from igus, which is supposed to protect the hose from wear and mechanical damage during movement. The designer is therefore considering switching to a larger energy chain. However, this would be more expensive and oversized for the application. 'To help designers save costs in such cases, we have found a solution to increase the internal height of the energy chains with a simple upgrade,' says Dieter Reitz, sales manager for e-chains at igus.
New bracket clips increase the internal space by up to 200 percent
The solution from igus for larger internal heights follows a modular principle. Users only need to remove the opening bridges of the energy chains. This can be done without tools. The bridges can be unclipped from the locking mechanism. Now the new solution comes into play: bracket clips that can also be easily clipped into the energy chain. They have the shape of a gate, which increases the internal height of the e-chain by up to 200 percent, depending on the model. 'Thanks to this modular solution, the energy chains of the E2.1, E4QL, and E4.1L series become significantly more flexible for changing conditions,' says Dieter Reitz. The bracket clips are now available for the E2.26, E2.38, E2.48, E4Q.64L, and E4.64L series.
More space for hydraulic and coolant hoses
The bracket clips also offer advantages when modernizing lathes, laser cutting systems, and grinding machines. There, designers often need to integrate larger hydraulic or coolant hoses, for example, when using more powerful units or new manufacturing processes. The increased internal height creates the necessary space and allows for the continued use of existing energy chains. This not only saves costs but also contributes to resource conservation, as existing components can be used longer.
