At a time when many industrial companies are postponing their investments or relocating production abroad, Hummel AG is making a conscious statement: the manufacturer of connection technology is strategically investing in its headquarters in southern Baden Denzlingen. A central component of the investment is the renovation and new construction of the storage area, for which Toyota Automated Logistics (TAL) has been commissioned as the general contractor. The new joint project is also a consistent continuation of the long-standing partnership between Hummel AG and the intralogistics specialist viastore, which has been part of Toyota Automated Logistics since April 2026.
The expansion of Hummel AG includes a new facility for galvanic nickel plating as well as the integration of the machining production from the Waldkirch site into the headquarters. This also requires the old pallet warehouse to be replaced and rebuilt – while operations continue. For Toyota Automated Logistics, this means a double challenge: to develop a future-proof intralogistics concept while simultaneously ensuring a complete interim concept for the transition period.
The expertise, innovative technologies, and systems of Toyota Automated Logistics enable a seamless transition to modern logistics processes and create the conditions for increased efficiency, flexibility, and long-term competitiveness.
Markus Biller, project manager at Hummel AG: “The decision to expand our main plant is a clear commitment to the location in Germany, to the employees, and to a modern, sustainable industry. This creates the conditions for us to develop and manufacture technologies tomorrow that our customers worldwide can rely on. A central component of this mammoth task is the
work of Toyota Automated Logistics, which, with its expertise and technology, not only positions our logistics and intralogistics with state-of-the-art technology and processes for the future but also ensures the transition process during ongoing operations without affecting production.”
As part of the renovation and new construction, the existing automatic small parts warehouse (AKL) with viaspeed type storage and retrieval machines will also be modernized. Additionally, the current version of the warehouse management system viadat from Toyota Automated Logistics will be used. This enables TAL to create the conditions for higher storage capacities and throughput, a more efficient material flow, and a more energy-efficient intralogistics.
Thomas Hibinger, CEO Toyota Automated Logistics, EMEA & APAC: “We are very pleased to continue the long-standing successful partnership with Hummel AG and to accompany the plant expansion with regard to the redesign and simultaneous modernization of logistics and intralogistics processes. Toyota Automated Logistics not only designs the final concept and system but also ensures smooth ongoing operations during the transition, renovation, and new construction phases.”
The installation of the system will begin in February 2027 and will be implemented step by step in several project phases. The go-live of the new facility is planned for December 2028. With this investment, Hummel AG is sustainably strengthening its logistics and intralogistics processes and, together with TAL, is creating the foundation for a long-term successful and competitive operation at its headquarters in Denzlingen.
