For over 25 years, HERMLE AG has been involved in the automation of its machining centers. Starting with simple pallet changers, compact handling systems followed, and from the beginning, robots were also used.

In the meantime, HERMLE has established a name and a second pillar with its automation solutions. The customer acquires both main components from one manufacturer and has only one contact person in case of service. 'Everything from a single source' is not just a slogan at HERMLE, but a real and valuable advantage that customers appreciate just as much as HERMLE's service benchmark.
The HS flex and HS flex heavy handling systems demonstrate their capabilities in numerous companies and in various applications in daily use, in the automated production of a wide range of parts.

With the HS flex hybrid handling system, we elevate the HS flex to the next higher performance level for the economical production of components up to 450 kg. Both pallets and vices are transported by the system from the setup area to the storage modules or into the working area. The following components were specially configured for the HS flex hybrid – the storage modules, the setup area, the gripper, and the adapter pallet.
The HS flex hybrid can be adapted to six different machine models and configured with one or two storage modules.
Modifications to the standard system

– Table modification with media transfer
– Lockable setup area
– Interchangeable grippers for base plates
– Small and large vises
– Special storage module for even higher inventory
The advantages at a glance
– Max. flexibility through the use of pallets and vises
– Up to five times more capacity
– Retention of the known setup strategy
– Intuitive operation
– HACS HERMLE Automation Control System – the intelligent order management
– Adaptable to machine models C12, C22, C32, C42, C250, C400
Example setup:

On the machine table, there is an adapter to raise the setup to create more space for machining when the unit is tilted. On it is a vice with a workpiece – a typical setup for a non-automated machine. The advantage of the HS flex hybrid, which can also handle vices, is that users do not have to change this setup.
Concerns that this type of automation is too complex are unfounded, as the proven working method can be maintained and workpieces can still be clamped in vices.

The great advantage of the HS flex hybrid is that this setup no longer has to be done in the machine while it is standing still. The setup is now performed at the HS flex hybrid's setup area. The vices with the workpieces are pre-stored on shelves on the HS flex hybrid, and the active gripper of the HS flex hybrid then automatically loads the vices into the machine – simply via pick-and-place method. This way, production continues and does not stand still.
The suitable solution for single-piece production (with high variance and small batch sizes), as well as for series production (due to the simple and quick setup during downtime and the increase in capacity. In addition, the system remains flexible for large and heavy components. The ideal solution to handle and process components of any size easily, universally, flexibly, and efficiently. Everything on one machine and everything from a single source.
