Innovative programming with XEDM from DCAM now available on all Mitsubishi EDM machines

Wire EDM is an extremely precise machining process that often serves as the final processing stage for complex, elaborate, and consequently expensive workpieces. Despite the correspondingly high demands on the machining task, it must be reliably executed in the future, and in some cases already today, by less qualified personnel. The first step in this process is creating machining programs using programming systems. This is exactly where Mitsubishi Electric and DCAM have focused, integrating a revolutionary simple programming app into the control interface of the EDM machines.

DCAM was founded in 1990 in Berlin and has focused exclusively on wire EDM since 1994, making it one of the recognized technology leaders in this field today. With XEDM, an app has now been integrated into Mitsubishi EDM machines that automatically creates finished machining programs for the EDM machine from 3D data. The creation of programs based on 2D data in dxf format is also supported. The process is not overloaded with various menu items and icons, but is simple and intuitive – the user experience of the new generation. The user is guided fully automatically through the entire process and confirms programming steps via the central control unit, the EDM-Pilot, or confirms the fully automatic programming with just one click.

When a 3D model is loaded into XEDM, it automatically recognizes all erodable geometries and generates the corresponding machining contours. The operator can still adjust some parameters such as outer or inner contour, contour entry and start points, approach distance, etc., if desired. XEDM makes logical suggestions, which can usually be easily adopted.

Once he has decided on a strategy and a quality level, he assigns a program name and storage location, which is also suggested, and simply presses the play button. The NC browser continuously and automatically writes the corresponding NC codes of the machining program. The operator receives graphical feedback at any time and warning messages if XEDM detects an error. This fully automated programming process thus ensures the highest level of safety. An important advantage is that it effectively addresses the prevailing shortage of skilled workers, as the software is easy to learn. Usually, just one hour of training is enough to master the process. XEDM is therefore tailored for direct application in production.

The shared data base and identical user interface of XEDM and XpressCAM, the new programming system for the workstation in design/preparation, create perfect synergy. Changes, even the assignment of machine and machining technology, can still be made directly at the machine in production with XEDM later on, saving time and money.
