With StarCeram N3000 P, Kyocera introduces an optimized high-performance material made of silicon nitride that offers clear advantages for use in gas-lubricated mechanical seals and bearing elements. The technical
ceramic is tailored for applications under high mechanical and thermal loads
and is therefore suitable for use under extreme operating conditions.

Advantages for gas-lubricated sealing systems

Thanks to its extraordinary material structure, StarCeram N3000 P ensures a
reliable seal with uniform pressure distribution and minimal leakage – even under high loads. Its extremely high wear and thermal shock resistance enables long-lasting, stable operation even under varying temperature conditions.

High demands on material and manufacturing

Gas-lubricated mechanical seals are beneficial in systems where rotating components must be sealed permanently and free of media – often under high temperatures, pressures, and speeds. Typical application areas include high-performance pumps, compressors, turbines, as well as systems for water treatment, in the chemical industry, or in oil and gas extraction.

The requirements for the materials used for mechanical seals are correspondingly high: in addition to high shape and dimensional stability, thermal shock resistance, and low wear, a low-porosity microstructure is particularly sought after. Only in this way can gas-carrying structures such as sealing grooves be realized with minimal leakage and maximum smooth operation.

Properties of the material StarCeram N3000 P

Kyocera's new material meets these requirements at the highest level and has the following properties:
• High flexural strength even at high temperatures
• Pronounced fracture toughness and wear resistance
• Low density
• High thermal shock resistance
• Electrical insulating capability – crucial for applications in vacuum technology
• Very fine, nearly pore-free structure

The extraordinary material quality with strongly limited porosity allows for particularly precise and damage-free laser processing, for example, for integrating gas-carrying grooves or special surface structures. The gas-carrying structures can be incorporated either by the customer or directly by Kyocera. Kyocera employs highly developed laser systems that can flexibly and reproducibly implement different microstructures such as recesses or grooves.

Technology partnership for tailored solutions
