In the disciplines of grinding and dressing, the drive electronics determine how stable processes run and how compact machines can be built. High-performance dressing spindles can be operated particularly precisely and dynamically with the highly efficient drive controllers from the SD4x series by SIEB & MEYER. These controllers have a very high control quality, enable low motor heating, and allow for the stable operation of sensorless asynchronous spindles.

Rotating grinding and diamond dressing tools operate under demanding conditions. High speeds, varying loads, and tight installation spaces are part of everyday life in many grinding machines. Therefore, a drive system that regulates the spindles consistently and reliably even under dynamic conditions is all the more important. The drive controllers from the SD4x series by SIEB & MEYER are specifically designed for high rotating field frequencies and also feature high speed stability. They not only control the spindle but also serve as an interface to the machine control, providing it with all relevant process data.

Constant spindle temperatures as a crucial factor

A key aspect of grinding is the thermal stability of the process. As the temperature rises, the length of the spindle changes, causing the tool to shift. Even slight deviations can affect the machining result. The SD4x controllers enable minimal motor heating, thereby helping to maintain a constant spindle temperature.

At the same time, the drives must be able to respond to changing load situations. In grinding and especially in dressing, a stable speed is just as important as a high available torque. This is where the significance of control technology becomes evident. Particularly relevant is sensorless vector control (SVC), which SIEB & MEYER also offers for asynchronous motors. The speed is determined and regulated without an additional sensor using current and voltage values. This allows for the operation of sensorless dressing spindles with high dynamics.

For machine manufacturers, this results in the advantage that the design effort is reduced, as the spindles are constructed more compactly and the limited installation space within the machine can be optimally utilized.

Individual solutions through parameterization

Since numerous different spindle types and motor variants are in use, the parameterization of the drive controllers plays a central role. The adjustment of the control to the respective spindle characteristic curve is therefore carried out in close technical collaboration between the customer and SIEB & MEYER. This results in individual drive concepts that are precisely tailored to the specific requirements of dressing: stable speeds, low thermal stress, and compact integration into the machine.
