Flender commissions new location in Brazil

Flender is expanding its presence in South America by acquiring the service business for wind turbines and industrial gear from Wärtsilä Brazil. The trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur creates ideal conditions for customer partnerships in a highly dynamic market

Flender has officially commissioned its new location in Brazil, thereby strengthening its presence and service offerings in South America, particularly in the wind energy sector, but also in the diverse industrial business. This step follows the successful acquisition of the service business for wind turbines and industrial gearboxes from Wärtsilä Brasil Ltda. It is the natural evolution of the collaboration that began in 2018 as a partnership.

Local commitment and customer proximity

With the strategic decision to acquire the business and establish a presence in Brazil, Flender has underscored its commitment to serving customers directly on-site. Through the acquisition, the gearbox service business, including the service workshop in Cabo de Santo Agostinho, 35 km south of Recife, Brazil, has been transferred to Flender.

With the entry into force of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement on May 1, Flender strengthens its position in one of the most dynamic industrial markets in South America at just the right time. Brazil's strong position in renewable energies – from wind to hydropower – creates ideal conditions to deepen customer partnerships and expand the company's local service capacities.

"Establishing our own location in Brazil is a logical step in the further development of our service business in South America. It lays the foundation for long-term growth, further investments, and even closer cooperation with our customers throughout the region," says Andreas Evertz, CEO of Flender.

The acquisition strengthens Flender's global service network. In addition to the wind business, the new location offers growth opportunities for industrial gearboxes, industrial customer service, couplings, and generators, further strengthening the company's market presence. ©Flender

The state-of-the-art facility was opened in 2022. Spanning over 5,000 square meters, it features testing capacities for wind turbine gearboxes of current performance classes. It is the first location in Latin America with such capacity and forms a strong basis for Flender's service activities. The focus is on the large stock of wind turbines in the region. Local customers are excellently served – through investments in locally available spare parts and equipment.

This increases availability and shortens delivery times. Flender is also examining future growth options, such as expanding testing and crane capacities to service the drive systems of the next generations of wind turbines in South America. Their stock has grown significantly over the past six years.

Team and business potential of Wärtsilä will be taken over

With the acquisition, Flender welcomes the gearbox service team from Wärtsilä Brazil. It includes employees from sales, workshop, and management. This integration of qualified specialists will further enhance operational capabilities and excellent customer service in the region.

The acquisition strengthens Flender's global service network. In addition to the wind business, the new location opens growth opportunities for industrial gearboxes, industrial service, couplings, and generators, further strengthening the company's market presence.

"With the opening of the location in Brazil, we have been there for our customers from day one. Thanks to the long-standing collaboration with Wärtsilä as a service partner, we already have an established network, local expertise, and a deep understanding of the Brazilian market. We are now building further on this strong foundation," adds Antti Turunen, VP Wind Service.

The official signing took place on August 18, 2025. With the final unconditional approval from the Brazilian competition authority (CADE), the transaction is now fully completed.
