On February 17, 2025, Dr. Jochen Stollenwerk took over as interim head of Fraunhofer ILT. He succeeds Prof. Constantin Häfner, who led the institute since 2019 and has now moved to Munich as the board member for research and transfer at the Fraunhofer Society.
Dr. Jochen Stollenwerk studied physics at RWTH Aachen and earned his doctorate in 2001 in the field of laser material processing at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. After his doctorate and his work as a research associate at Fraunhofer ILT, he moved to the industry in 2001 to TRUMPF Laser Marking Systems AG, Switzerland, where he led the applications department. In 2004, he returned to Aachen and played a key role in establishing the Chair of Technology of Optical Systems TOS at RWTH Aachen University. He worked there as a senior engineer until mid-2024. In parallel, Dr. Stollenwerk held various positions at Fraunhofer ILT before being appointed Deputy Institute Director in March 2024.
Dr. Stollenwerk's research focuses particularly on digital photonic production, surface technology, optical systems for production, EUV technology, and additive manufacturing. As an enthusiastic scientist and active mentor, he has supervised numerous theses and doctoral dissertations, fostering young talents. His special commitment is reflected not only in his technical expertise but also in his passionate dedication to the further development of photonics.
"My goal is to strengthen our institute's position as a leading center for applied laser technology together with the employees of Fraunhofer ILT, to expand innovation in various application areas, and to consistently leverage the potential of digitalization in photonics," Dr. Stollenwerk looks forward to his future tasks. In his new role, he will continue the mission of a technologically leading and future-oriented research institute and engage as a reliable partner for our customers and the photonics industry.
Fraunhofer ILT in Aachen is a dynamic and innovative research center that promotes interdisciplinary exchange between scientists and industry partners, leading to creative solutions and groundbreaking developments. Thanks to its modern facilities and highly qualified staff, Fraunhofer ILT works at the forefront of applied laser technology.
With Dr. Jochen Stollenwerk taking over as interim head, both continuity in the leadership team and the continuation of the strategic topics of Fraunhofer ILT are ensured. This creates a strong foundation for future developments and innovations.
