Siemens AG has completed the acquisition of the industrial drive technology business from ebm-papst. It will henceforth be operated by Siemens under the designation 'Mechatronic Systems'. With around 650 employees, it includes intelligent, integrated mechatronic systems in the low-voltage protection range as well as innovative steering systems that are used, for example, in freely moving, driverless transport systems. The acquisition complements the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio and strengthens Siemens' position as a leading provider of solutions for flexible manufacturing automation. The integration of the new portfolio into the existing automation portfolio and the utilization of Siemens' global distribution network open up new market accesses and significant business potentials in the field of intelligent, battery-operated drive and robotics solutions.

'The new portfolio elements significantly broaden and strengthen our customer offering in the automation and digitalization of production processes for smart factories. The integrated mechatronic drive systems increase flexibility, productivity, and efficiency in the globally growing market for conveyor systems and autonomous transport systems, such as mobile robots, driverless transport systems, and shuttles,' explains Achim Peltz, CEO of the Motion Control Business Unit at Siemens Digital Industries. Particularly advantageous is the seamless compatibility with Simatic controls and the software-based safety solution Safe Velocity for mobile robotics.

The expanded portfolio is available in 24V and 48V versions and includes two main variants: the Simotics E-1EE1 (brushless inner rotor), which is particularly suitable for battery-operated applications in conveyor, storage, and sorting systems, and the Simotics E-1EV1 (brushless outer rotor), which impresses with high efficiency and compact design in intralogistics. The offering is complemented by suitable gearbox solutions that are exclusively available in combination with the Simotics E motors. A special innovation is the Simotics E ArgoDrive steering system, which has been specifically developed for the growing demands in intralogistics and automated production. In the Light, Standard, and Heavy variants, it enables omnidirectional, safe, and precise control of driverless transport vehicles even with heavy loads.

These systems support Siemens' sustainability goals through energy-efficient solutions and contribute to the realization of flexible, scalable, and safe digital factories. The newly integrated business includes two locations in Germany (St. Georgen and Lauf a.d. Pegnitz) and one location in Romania (Oradea).

In March 2024, the ebm papst Group announced the sale of the Industrial Drive Technology (IDT) division to Siemens AG. Both parties had signed a corresponding agreement. With the now completed sale to Siemens AG, the IDT gains international market access through a global sales organization. This opens up new horizons for innovations and further successful business growth. All employees of the division were taken over by Siemens. The price has been kept confidential.
